Things Aren't Like They Should Be

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

Things aren't like they should be.

Damage and destruction are all around. Fear and frustration are attempting to take over. People find themselves in desperate need. Communities begin the long road to recovery paved through rebuilding.

We are now facing a "new" normal here in Eastern North Carolina. We might want to wish it away or pray that it didn't come to our doorstep, but it doesn't change the reality of our situation.

Things aren't like they should be.

Living in a broken world we know this to be true. We turn on the news, open up social media or watch television and what we encounter is society groaning. But, it doesn't stop there. At one time or another, we experience this uneasiness inside our own heart. Something isn't right within our soul. Something is missing.

We respond to this tension in a host of different ways. We try to numb it. We attempt to escape it. We distract ourselves to avoid it. We get paralyzed with anxiety and fear because of it. We do our best to conquer it through our own effort. The turmoil might subside for a moment, but it always reappears.

Things aren't like they should be.

All of these pinings we feel is our heart's way of trying to get our attention. Every longing at its core, even those we feel in the midst of pain, suffering, and despair, is a longing for God. Our soul cries out for things to be made right. And they have been - through Christ and Christ alone.

He quenches our thirst. He dries our tears. He comforts us in our sorrow. He invites us to trust Him and find ourselves satisfied in the rich and full life He offers.

Things aren't like they should be...but Christ conquered this world so take heart.

  • Where do you find yourself saying, "things aren't like they should be"? What would it look like for you to take heart and put your trust in Christ with this situation?

God, remind me that it is through You, and You alone, that I find fulfillment. When my world feels overwhelming and bleak, may I look to You for comfort. Let me walk in this truth today. In Your name, Jesus. Amen.
